For our first Word of the Week, we have the word:
Whilst, no, this isn’t an English word, it felt fitting to begin the series with it anyway!
Bonheur is a French word meaning “happiness” in English. It encompasses everything that “happiness” does in English and it can also be found in multiple French expressions. The word itself actually comes from two Latin words, bonum and augurum, the first meaning “good, positive” and the second meaning “omen, divination”.
I personally chose it as the name of this blog because my aim is to spread happiness! It’s also the name of the French equivalent of the Mr. Men character, Little Miss Sunshine, Madame Bonheur. I simply decided to combine the two languages together. Since becoming a teacher, one of the nicknames my friends have given me is Little Miss Sunshine so it just felt right to keep that as my blog name but add a French twist to it.
I also think that the word needs some more happiness in it at the moment. Particularly in the education sector where spirits are low and everyone could do with a bit of a boost! You don’t even have to go out of your way to make someone smile. Sometimes the smallest of gestures mean the most and they can even have the power to transform someone’s day. Think about the last time someone made you happy – what was it that they did?
Make it your goal this week to spread some happiness and make someone smile!
