I recently had a really inspiring conversation with a friend about our creative hobbies. Whilst mine tend to be writing and calligraphy, hers range from glass making to painting murals.
She explained that she has tried out so many creative activities simply because she thought they looked fun. This really inspired me to try new things without necessarily aiming for perfection.
In today’s blog post, I thought I’d share 5 things I’d love to learn.
5 Things I’d Love to Learn
1) How to speak German
Language learning is a common ambition. It’s often something people aspire to be able to do and learning a language can be a really great adventure. Since I already speak two languages fluently, I’d love to learn German next. I learnt it in school for a little bit but I didn’t get very far with it!
2) How to paint
I’ve tried painting many times and always really enjoyed it. But I can’t say I’m good at painting. Something I’d really love to learn is how to properly create beautiful abstract canvases. For this, I’d need to learn things to do with colour theories and experimenting with shapes. It’s definitely a skill I’d love to have!
3) How to cook
I don’t mean how to cook pasta and pesto or make toast. I mean properly cook, making everything from scratch and being able to create recipes. I’ve always admired people who can grab a few random ingredients and come up with a delicious meal. Learning how to cook properly is something that can change your life as having good nutrition is essential to maintaining your health and fitness.
4) How to play chess
A bit of a random one but I was very inspired after watching The Queen’s Gambit when it came out. I think that being able to play chess nowadays is seen as quite an impressive skill. It’s a game that is completely timeless and that can bring about connections between ordinary strangers. I’d really love to learn how to play chess, even if I end up being really bad at it!
5) How to play the cello
I’m a musician and have been since I was quite young. I can play 5 different instruments already but I don’t play any string instruments. The cello has always attracted me as it just sounds so breathtakingly beautiful. I did try out the violin once in Primary school and wasn’t too terrible at it which gives me hope that the cello would be realistic to learn. I’m not sure where I could buy one or even where I could keep it at home but it would be the dream to learn it.
This year has already shown me that it’s really never too late to learn anything. I think that if we set ourselves realistic goals, we remember that we’re doing it for fun, and we try our best then there really is nothing stopping us from learning something new.
My hope is that I end up being one of those people who tries everything. I want to live life to the fullest and really give everything a shot. If I get to the end of 2025 having learnt at least one of these 5 things, then I’ll be very happy.
